Chamber music

The term chamber music originally referred to music that was intended for the princely “chamber”, i.e. the secular - representative sphere; it was therefore to be distinguished from church music. It was not until the Baroque period that the term was narrowed down to purely instrumental music for small ensembles. From the Classical period onwards, however, there is also an explicit differentiation from the burgeoning concert music. The most well - known genres of classical chamber music are the string quartet and piano trio. In the Romantic period, chamber music experienced a concertante and virtuoso expansion of the existing musical means.
