Frøy Aagre (* 8 June 1977 in Tønsberg) is a Norwegian jazz saxophonist, bandleader and composer.

Life

Aagre started playing the saxophone at the age of twelve; she came to jazz through the music of Dave Holland and Wayne Shorter. She studied saxophone and composition in Birmingham, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree and also studied Far Eastern gamelan music. She then completed a Master’s degree at Middlesex University in London; she then continued her studies in Oslo and New York with Dave Liebman and in Buenos Aires at the Conservatoiro Nacional Lopez Bouchardo.

In the early 2000s, she founded the formation Offbeat; in 2004, a first solo album with her own compositions was released on the Norwegian label AIM. In mid-2008, she went on a US tour with an American band consisting of pianist Kris Davis, bassist Michael Bates and drummer Jeff Davis and performed with Kenny Wheeler at the London Jazz Festival. Jazzthetik magazine described her quartet album Cycle of Silence. with Andreas Ulvo (piano), Audun Ellingsen (bass) and Freddy Wike (drums), released on the ACT label in 2010, as her “international breakthrough”.

In the course of her career so far, Aagre has played with musicians such as Pee Wee Ellis, Mike and Mark Mondesir, Annette Aguilar, Eivind Opsvik, Thomas Strønen, Mathias Eick and Bjørn Kjellemyr. Frøy Aagre, who lives near Oslo, cites John Coltrane, Jan Garbarek, Dexter Gordon and Steve Lacy as influences.
