Branca Bilharaus modern

Branca Lopes de Alcântara Bilhar ( * 1886 – Rio de Janeiro; † 22. Dezember 1928) was a Brazilian pianist and composer.

Life

Branca Lopes de Alcântara Bilhar was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1886 and was the niece of the guitarist and composer Sátiro Bilhar. She played the violin and piano from the age of eight. In 1911, at the age of 14, Branca lost her parents and became an orphan. She moved to Rio de Janeiro to live with her aunt Anna Bilhar.
Around 1911, she entered the Instituto Nacional de Música do Rio de Janeiro and graduated with honours from Godofredo Leão Veloso’s piano class. At the institute she had lessons with Barrozo Neto and Luciano Gallet.
Together with her sister Ana Bilhar, she founded the Colégio Nossa Senhora de Lourdes, which was first reopened in Guaramiranga and later in Fortaleza.
She has performed as a solo pianist and in chamber music groups. She took on a teaching role and had Eunice Katunda among her students.
