Minna Brandes

Life

Minna Brandes was born in Berlin on 21 May 1765.

She lived with her parents Ester Charlotte Brandes, née Koch (actress) and Johann Christian Brandes (playwright, director, actor) throughout her life.

She travelled with them throughout Europe and performed on stage from the age of four, receiving her musical training from Muriottini in Dresden, Mara and Concialini (singing), Hönecke in Weimar and Transchel in Dresden (piano). She has performed publicly as a singer and actress as well as a pianist.

However, she did not publish her compositions – various works for piano as well as Italian and German vocal pieces. Instead, they were only published by Friedrich Hönicke, the city’s theatre director, at the Herold publishing house after her early death on 12 June 1788 in Hamburg.

Minna Brandes lived in Hamburg from 1782 and performed at the theatre there.
