Anna Amalia von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (* 24 October 1739 in Wolfenbüttel; † 10 April 1807 in Weimar) was Duchess of Saxe-Weimar and Eisenach by marriage. She worked as a regent, patron and composer.

Life

Anna Amalia was born on 24 October 1739 as the fifth of thirteen children of the ducal couple Philippine Charlotte (née of Prussia) (1716-1801) and Charles I of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (1713-1780) in Wolfenbüttel Castle. She received an education befitting princesses of the higher nobility, especially from the theologians Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Jerusalem and Matthias Theodor Christoph Mittelstädt. Religious instruction formed the most important part of her education, which was conducted in both German and French. Anna Amalia’s education followed the Protestant traditions of the House of Brunswick, but also integrated ‘rational’ principles of knowledge and confessional balancing thoughts. In addition, she was taught the history of states, regents and the constitution of the empire, geography and the fine arts, thus learning to dance and play the piano.

The Duchess possessed connoisseurship in music and left behind several musical compositions.
She also made great patronage efforts in music. The musicians she supported – among them Charlotte von Stein – did not become widely known, but enlivened the sociability at her court.
