Alma Deutscher (* 19 February 2005 in Basingstoke) is a British-Austrian classical music composer, pianist and violinist.

Life

Alma Deutscher is the daughter of the literary scholar Janie Deutscher (née Steen) and the linguist Guy Deutscher. She began playing the piano at the age of two and added the violin at three. She could sing with absolute pitch before she could speak and read music before she could read. After barely a year of playing the violin, she was playing Handel’s sonatas. At the age of four, Deutscher began to improvise on the piano and composed her own pieces. She was taught at home until the age of 16. Deutscher’s early musical education focused on creative improvisation and followed the teaching method of partimenti. She received lessons in improvisation from the Swiss musician Tobias Cramm.

Deutscher came to media attention in 2012 at the age of seven after British writer and actor Stephen Fry commented very positively on her YouTube channel. In 2014, leading figures in the classical music world, including conductor Zubin Mehta, brought Deutscher to their attention after she appeared on the television programme Intermezzo with Arik, hosted by pianist and educator Arie Vardi. That same year, a viral YouTube mashup video by musician Kutiman was released that featured an ostinato from one of Deutscher’s early videos.

Deutscher has performed her own music as a soloist with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna, Tonkünstler Orchestra, Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra (China), Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. She has performed as a soloist with her own compositions at the Lucerne Festival and the Aix-en-Provence Festival. At the invitation of the Austrian Chancellor, she played at several state occasions at the Federal Chancellery in Vienna. At the opening concert of the Carinthian Summer Festival 2017, Deutscher performed her violin concerto as well as the world premiere of her piano concerto with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra. In 2019, she made her debut at New York’s Carnegie Hall accompanied by the Orchestra of St. Luke’s.

In 2018 Deutscher moved to Vienna with her family and has been studying conducting with Johannes Wildner at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna since 2021.
