Mari Kaasinen (* 6 December 1971 in Rääkkylä, Finland) is a Finnish singer, songwriter, composer and musician whose main instrument is the kantele.

Life

Kaasinen graduated from Joensuu Lyceum in 1990 and began studying at the Sibelius Academy the same year. At that time she was already semi-professional, having sung in Värttinae since 1983. She studied classical singing, accordion, violin and folk music at the Sibelius Academy, graduating with a Master’s degree in music. Other ensembles she has worked with include the Ho Orchestra, led by Swiss pianist and composer Simon Hon, and Sirmakka.

Together with her sister Sari Kaasinen, she is one of the founding members of the band Värttinä.

Mari Kaasinen lived in Hausjärvi Oitti from 2006 to 2019, when she moved to Helsinki. By 2021, she had written a total of 30 compositions and lyrics for the band on all thirteen Värttinä albums. In addition to touring, Kaasinen has taught children in more than ten schools since 1987 and runs her own music school in Hausjärvi.
