Clarisse Leite Dias Baptista (* 11 January 1917 in São Paulo; † 11 May 2003 ibid.) was a Brazilian composer, pianist and music educator.

Life

Clarisse Leite was born in São Paulo on 11 January 1917 and studied in São Paulo. In 1930, she received a scholarship from the Conservatório Dramático e Musical de São Paulo to study in France. She studied with Zilda Leite Rizzo, José Kliass and Teodoro Nogueira (composition) and Orestes Farinelle (orchestration). Two years later, she won first prize in a competition, the Gomes Cardim Gold Medal.

After completing her studies, she worked as a professor of music at the Academia Internacional in Rio de Janeiro.

She gave courses in technique and anatomical gymnastics (a method she developed) at the Santa Marcelina Music School in São Paulo, the Pio XII Music Faculty in Bauru, the Lavignac Conservatory in Santos and the Beethoven Institute in São Vicente, as well as interpretation courses in Criciúma, São Paulo, Bauru and Ribeirão Preto.

In collaboration with the Japanese Consulate, she promoted Japanese classical music in Brazil; in return, her Concerto No. 1 was performed at the 1977 Spring Festival in Tokyo.

She gave several recitals in Brazil and also performed in Austria and Hungary. She promoted the Clarisse Conducting Competitions, which are held annually throughout the interior of the state of São Paulo.
