Marianna von Martines, also called Nannette Martinez (* 4 May 1744 in Vienna; † 13 December 1812 ibid.) was an Austrian composer, harpsichordist and singer (soprano).

Life

Marianna Martines was born in Vienna in 1744, the daughter of Theresa and Nicolò Martines, a Neapolitan and master of ceremonies to the papal nuncio in Vienna. She had eleven siblings, six of whom died in infancy. One sister and four brothers remained. These were raised to the hereditary knighthood by Empress Maria Theresa on 23 January 1774.

Marianna Martines was educated and encouraged in music, languages and literature by the Italian poet and librettist Pietro Metastasio (1698-1782), who was court poet under Emperor Charles VI. Martines’ father came to Michaelerhaus at Kohlmarkt No. 1182 (from 1795 No. 1220) as Metastasio’s friend and lived there with his family as the poet’s lodger.

In her brief autobiography, Martines names only two teachers: Joseph Haydn and Giuseppe Bonno. She does not mention Nicola Porpora or Johann Adolph Hasse. She received piano lessons from the young Joseph Haydn from the age of ten. He lived in the same house and gave her daily lessons in return for free board. Even at the beginning of this training, Marianna Martines is said to have played excellently.

Through her father and Metastasio, Martines made early contacts with important personalities in politics, culture and society. She often sang and played at the court at the invitation of Empress Maria Theresa. At least once a week she gave musical soirées at her home. There is no evidence of a joint performance with Mozart. Nor is there any evidence of the honorary doctorate she was supposedly awarded by the University of Padua. Metastasio died in 1782, leaving his estate to the Martines siblings.

On 13 December 1812, Marianna von Martines died of tuberculosis at the age of 68. Two days earlier, her sister Antonia, who was three years younger and with whom Marianna had lived for decades, had died of old age. Martines was buried in the St. Marx cemetery in Vienna.
