Lee Myung-Sunaus modern

Lee Myung-Sun (* 1973 in Seoul, South Korea) is a South Korean-German composer.

Life

Lee Myung-Sun was born in 1973 in Seoul, South Korea. She studied composition and music education at Kwan-Dong University from 1993-1997.
In 1997-1999 she continued her composition studies at Sook-Myung Women’s University.
2001-2003 she completed a postgraduate course in composition with honours at the Musikhochschule Dresden with Wilfried Krätzschmar.
2003-2005 she completed a master class in composition at the Dresden Academy of Music with Wilfried Krätzschmar.

She was a finalist in the piano composition competition of the “Ritter Prize 2003” of the Oscar and Vera Ritter Foundation. In 2009, the violin duo won 2nd prize in the university competition of the Mannheim Musikhochschule with their work “Geisterspiel” for two violins. In 2012, the AsianArt Ensemble was awarded the Deutscen Schallplattenkritik prize for their solo work for Daegŭm “Olleh”, among others.

In 1998, an exchange project between Japan and Korea took them to Tokyo,
where her string quintet “Landregen” was performed.
In 2005 and 2007 her organ works were performed at the “International Festival for Contemporary Organ Music” in Cologne. In 2008, the festival “Tage für Neue Musik” of the Akademie für Tonkunst Darmstadt dedicated a portrait concert to her.
In 2013 she performed at the festival Soundscape Eastasia and Korean Music Festival in Germany, in 2014 at the Beethovenfest in Bonn, in 2015 at the “Tage für Neue Musik” of the Akademie für Tonkunst Darmstadt.
In 2016 she received a scholarship for New Music and Sound Art from the Berlin Senate for Culture.
In 2017, she received a composition commission from the TURBULENZEN festival. The work “Aufschrei” was premiered by the International Ensemble EAPOS at Radialstem V in Berlin.
In 2020, she received a special scholarship from the Senate Department for Culture and Europe.
2021 she received a Neustart Kultur scholarship from GEMA.
2022 she received a Neustart Kultur scholarship from the Musikfonds.

Various ensembles and soloists, including the Munich Chamber Orchestra, Ensemble Courage, Ensemble Unitedberlin, Ensemble Omnibus, Violinduo, Duo Berlin Strings and Percussion, AsianArt Ensemble, Duo Momentum, or the organist the organist Thomas Noll performed her works.

She has been living in Berlin as a freelance composer since 2005.
