Jadwiga Sarneckaaus impressionism

Jadwiga Sarnecka (* 1877 in Sławuta in Volhynia or 1883 in Szarogród in Podolia; † 29 December 1913 in Kraków) was a Polish composer and pianist.

Life

Quite little is known about Sarnecka’s life. She was a pupil of Aleksander Michałowski and Theodor Leschetizky. Her aspiration as a pianist was to become a composer, so she took private lessons from time to time with Władysław Żeleński, Felicjan Szopski and possibly Henryk Melcer. She had her first compositions printed at her own expense until Feliks “Manggha” Jasieński supported the printing costs.

Sarnecka won second prize for her Ballade No. IV at the composition competition for the centenary of Frédéric Chopin’s birth in Lviv in 1910. The first prize went to Karol Szymanowski.

The composer died of tuberculosis in Kraków and was buried there in the Rakowicki cemetery. Her grave can no longer be found.
