Käthe Volkart-Schlageraus modern

Käthe Volkart-Schlager (* 7 February 1897 in Vienna; † 2 April 1976 in Filderstadt) was an Austrian composer, pianist and music teacher.

Life

Käthe Volkart-Schlager was born in Vienna in 1897. She studied at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart with Max von Pauer and Wilhelm Kempff. She graduated in 1917 and gave concerts and lectures for teachers. As a musician she travelled to Sweden, Turkey and Finland.

In addition to chamber and piano music, Käthe Volkart-Schlager’s compositional work centred on art songs. The Hermann Hesse settings Wie sind die Tage schwer and Vor dem Schlafengehen on poems from the 1914 volume Musik des Einsamen belong to her early phase as a song composer. These songs were performed in 2011 in a concert by the Liedklasse of the Musikhochschule Stuttgart in collaboration with the International Hugo Wolf Academy and recorded by SWR along with other songs by the composer. Volkart-Schlapper’s music, much of it for piano four hands, was published by the Süddeutscher Musikverlag (today Barenreiter). These publications were considered daring and dangerous, especially for the then publishing director Willy Müller, since the Volkart-Schlager family openly opposed National Socialism.

Käthe Volkart-Schlager wrote instrumental instruction literature for children, such as the Bunte Bilderbuch für junge Klavierspieler (1941). She taught piano improvisation at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart from 1947 to 1969. She received the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class in September 1967.
