Grete von Zieritzaus modern

Grete von Zieritz (* 10 March 1899 in Vienna, Austria-Hungary; † 26 November 2001 in Berlin) was an Austrian-German composer, pianist and music teacher.

Life

Grete von Zieritz, the daughter of Karl Ferdinand Zieritz, a career officer who was elevated to the nobility in 1918, and the painter Henrica Vera Josefa Zieritz, née Neumann, grew up in Vienna, Innsbruck and Graz and received her first piano lessons at the age of six. She completed her training with Hugo Kroemer (piano) and Roderich Mojsisovics von Mojsvár (composition) with honours in 1917. In the same year, she moved to Berlin and continued her training with Martin Krause, a pupil of Franz Liszt, and Rudolf Maria Breithaupt. After the successful performance of her Japanese Songs, she decided to become a composer in 1921. She stayed in Berlin and attended Franz Schreker’s famous masterclass from 1926 to 1931. After her marriage to the writer Herbert Johannes Gigler, she went by the name Grete Gigler-Zieritz for several years.

In 2009, Zieritzgasse in Vienna-Donaustadt (22nd district) was named after her.
