Fantasia

A fantasia is a piece of music that does not have a fixed form such as the classical sonata. This unbound form emphasises the emotional and expressive expression of the musical idea. Despite being written down, this idea should convey the impression of spontaneity, which is why one can also speak of a written improvisation in a broader sense.
The name fantasia appeared in music in the 16th century and is still used today. An overarching uniform musical structure is not recognisable. Since the end of the 18th century, the fantasia has been an instrumental piece, especially for keyboard instruments, which developed further in terms of their expressive possibilities over the course of the 19th century. The boundaries to similar pieces such as impromptu or a variation movement are fluid.
