Kyrie

Kyrie eleison (“Lord, have mercy!”), sometimes shortened to Kyrieleis, is the beginning of a short, usually three - part litany that is sung on various occasions in the Christian liturgy. The Kyrie eleison is best known as part of the opening of the service. Litanies such as the Litany of All Saints or the Lauretanian Litany also begin with the Kyrie call.
In mass settings of all eras, the Kyrie usually forms the first movement; in the Requiem, it is preceded by the Introit.
