Lydia Austeraus modern

Lydia Auster (* 30 May 1912 in Petropavlovsk, Russian Empire; † 3 April 1993 in Tallinn, Estonia) was an Estonian composer.

Life

Lydia Auster studied piano and composition in Omsk from 1927 to 1931 and at the Leningrad Conservatory from 1931 to 1934. She completed her studies at the Moscow Conservatory with Vissarion Shebalin in 1938. She worked as a pianist and composer in Central Asia until 1944.

In 1945 she moved to Tallinn. From 1948 to 1984, Lydia Auster was the music director of the State Television and Radio Committee of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic.

Lydia Auster composed songs for soloists and choirs from the 1930s onwards. In addition, she created numerous pieces of music for piano, winds, violin as well as works for symphony orchestra. She wrote the libretti for numerous ballets and for the short opera Maihommik. Influences of national romanticism run through most of her musical works.
