Carola Bauckholt (* 21 August 1959 in Krefeld) is a German composer, publisher and intermedia artist.

Life

After working for several years at the Theater am Marienplatz TAM in Krefeld, Bauckholt studied under Mauricio Kagel at the Cologne University of Music from 1978 to 1984. In 1985, she founded the Thürmchen Verlag publishing house together with Caspar Johannes Walter, Erik Oña, María Cecilia Villanueva, Mariano Etkin and Manos Tsangaris; she has also been a member of the Thürmchen Ensemble since 1991. She has been married to the German composer Caspar Johannes Walter since 1996. The couple moved to Freiburg im Breisgau with their two children in mid-2013. From 2015, she was Professor of Composition with a specialisation in contemporary music theatre at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz. Bauckholt retired from there in 2024.

She has received numerous grants and awards (including at the B. A. Zimmermann Competition organised by the Cologne Society for New Music in 1987 and at the Carl Maria von Weber Competition in Dresden in 1992/93) and represented Germany at the World Music Days of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) in Copenhagen in 1996, Seoul in 1997 and in Switzerland in 2004.

A central aspect of Bauckholt’s works is her reflection on the phenomenon of perception and understanding. Her compositions often blend elements of performance, music theatre and concert music. To this end, she frequently employs noisy sounds, often generated by unconventional means, which she does not incorporate into a predetermined compositional framework, but rather observes and allows to unfold freely.

Bauckholt was elected a member of the Music Section of the Berlin Academy of Arts in 2013, and in 2020 a member of the Arts Class of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts. In autumn 2021, she was elected Director of the Music Section of the Berlin Academy of Arts.
