Violeta Dinescuaus modern

Violeta Dinescu (* 13 July 1953 in Bucharest) is a Romanian-German pianist, composer and university teacher. Her most important work to date is the children’s opera “Der 35. Mai” (May 35), based on the novel “Der 35. Mai oder Konrad reitet in die Südsee” (May 35 or Konrad rides to the South Seas) by Erich Kästner, which premiered at the Nationaltheater Mannheim in 1986 and has since been performed in numerous opera houses in the German-speaking world.

Life

Violeta Dinescu began her musical studies in 1972 at the Ciprian Porumbescu Conservatory in Bucharest, where she passed her state exams with distinction in 1976, as well as three diplomas in composition, piano and pedagogy. She then deepened her composition studies with Myriam Marbe. In 1978 she received a teaching position at the George Enescu Music School in Bucharest for music theory, aesthetics, counterpoint, harmony and piano. In 1980 she was admitted to the Romanian Composers’ Association. This was followed by her first concert performances, radio recordings and composition prizes.

Since 1982 Violeta Dinescu has lived and worked in the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1986, she premiered her first opera Hunger und Durst (Hunger and Thirst) after Eugène Ionesco in Freiburg. Since 1986 she has been a lecturer at various German universities and since 1996 has held a professorship for applied composition at the University of Oldenburg, where she organises colloquia with composers, including Jean-Luc Darbellay and Graham Waterhouse in 2009. She has received over fifty international prizes and awards for her compositions. Her work is published by the Dohr publishing house.
