Birgit Djupedalaus modern

Birgit Djupedal (*1994 in Bodø, Norway) is a Norwegian choral conductor and composer.

Life

Djupedal received her Master’s degree in composition from the Iceland University of the Arts in 2018. She has a bachelor’s degree in musicology and a one-year degree in church music at NTNU, the university in Trondheim.

She composes acoustic music for all kinds of ensembles. Her music is a mixture of traditional harmony and free tonality, often with aspects of performance and political themes.

She currently works as a freelance composer, conductor and performer and lives in Oslo. Djupedal’s music has been performed at Festspillene i Bergen, Nordic Music Days, Musikkfest Hardanger, Nordland musikkfestuke, Trondheim kammermusikkfestival, Ultima, Sumartónleikar í Skálholti (IS) og Vaka Þjóðlistahátið (IS), Óperudagar í Reykjavík (IS), shown on Icelandic television RÚV and was part of the European Year of Cultural Heritage. She was selected as an open call artist for Festpillene i Nord-Norge 2022. There she worked more closely with painter and textile artist Hanne Korsnes on the project Disorommet.

In 2020-2021, Djupedal was artistic and executive director of the Skálholt Summer Concerts together with Ásbjörg Jónsdóttir. The Summer Concerts are the oldest festival still running in Iceland. It was founded in 1975, and the summer concerts mainly feature new music and early music. The festival has been nominated for the award “Musical Event of the Year – Festival/Event Series” at the Iceland Music Awards for the festival in 2020.
