Sophie Gail (* 28 August 1775 in Paris; † 24 July 1819 in Paris) was a French opera singer, composer and writer.

Life

Sophie Garre was born in Paris in the parish of Saint Sulpice, the daughter of Marie-Louise Adelaide Colloz and the surgeon Claude-Francois Garre (1730-1799).
She studied the piano as a child and published her first composition, a romance, at the age of 14.

At the age of 19, she married the publisher Jean-Baptiste Gail (1755-1829) and had a son, Jean François Gail.

She and her husband divorced in 1801.

Her first composed songs were published in 1790. Sophie Gail studied singing with Bernardo Mengozzi and successfully toured the south of France and Spain. She also studied music theory with François-Joseph Fétis, among others. She composed several songs and romances as well as one-act operas in the opéra-comique genre. She toured as a singer in 1816 in London and in 1818 through Germany and Austria together with Angelica Catalani.

Her son Jean François Gail (1795-1845) became a composer and music critic.

She died in Paris.
