Frida Kernaus modern

Frida Kern (* 9 March 1891 in Vienna; † 23 December 1988 in Linz) was an Austrian composer and conductor.

Life

Frida, née Seitz, was the eldest of four siblings and moved to Linz with her parents, Wilhelm and Hermine Seitz, in 1896. There she married the bank clerk Max Kern in 1909 at the age of 18.
After recovering from a bout of typhoid fever, she began studying at the Vienna Academy of Music from 1912 to 1914 with the financial help of her parents.
In 1923, she continued her music studies with Franz Schmidt (composition) and Robert Heger (conducting). Other teachers included Dirk Fock, Eusebius Mandyczewski and Alexander Wunderer. She graduated in 1927 with a degree in composition and conducting and then worked as a freelance composer.

She founded a ladies’ band with which she toured Europe and North Africa.

The works she composed were played on the radio and at concerts.

On 1 April 1933, she applied to join the NSDAP, but could no longer be admitted due to the party ban. At the end of the year, she broke off contact with the party. An application for membership after the annexation of Austria was therefore rejected in 1939. From 1943 to 1945, she was appointed as a lecturer at the University of Vienna, where she taught harmony, counterpoint, formal theory and instrumental studies.

When she was rehabilitated after the war, she was awarded the title of professor in 1960 and became vice-president of the Upper Austrian Artists’ Association. She was also a member of the Innviertler Künstlergilde.

Her estate can be found in the Austrian National Library.
