Halina Krzyżanowska (* 4 August 1867 in Courbevoie; † 18 January 1937 in Rennes) was a Polish-French pianist and composer.

Life

The daughter of François Krzyżanowski (1838-1908), a former captain (from the Dębno branch of the family), and Josephine Marie Kałużyńska (1843-1907), Helene was born in 1867, a year after her parents’ marriage. Her brother Michel was born in 1873.

At the age of 13, she won first prize in the singing competition at the Paris Conservatoire, where she studied piano with Félix Le Couppey and Antoine François Marmontel and composition with Ernest Guiraud. She received a first accessit there in 18813, a second prize in January 1883 and a first prize in 1885. She studied music composition with Ernest Guiraud. She gave her first concert in 1885.

She composed mainly piano works, chamber music works and a sonata for cello, violin and other works.

From 1900 she was professor of piano at the Rennes Conservatory. She played in many European countries.

She died at the age of 69 at her home in the Rue du Bois Rondel. She was buried on 21 January at the North Cemetery in Rennes.

She was awarded the Order of Polonia Restituta.
