Life

In 2006, Lina Lapelytė graduated from the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (LAMT) with a diploma in classical violin. In 2009 she graduated from the London College of Art (LCC) with a Bachelor of Arts in Sound Art with distinction, and in 2013 she obtained an MA in Sculpture from the Royal College of Art (RCA).

She is an active participant in international artist residency programmes such as the Akademie Schloss Solitude Residency in Stuttgart, the Nida Art Colony at the Vilnius Academy of Arts and the Centre for Contemporary Art at Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw.

Since 2019, she has been teaching as a visiting lecturer at the Royal College of Art in London.

Lina Lapelytė’s work is performance-based and inextricably linked to music. It is rich in references to popular culture, gender stereotypes and nostalgia.

Her work combines several disciplines, deals with performativity and its various forms, and manipulates genre boundaries. Lina Lapelytė weaves elements of popular music and opera with folk rituals and contemporary everyday culture.

She often involves members of communities and collectives in her projects. The works bring together professional and amateur performers. The collective working methodology is also reflected in the successful creative collaborations. While living in London, she created the performances Hunky Bluff (2014) and Candy Shop (2013-1015). In 2013, the contemporary opera Good Days!, created together with artists Rugila Barzdžiukaite and Vaiva Grainyte, won six international awards. The opera about the different fates of the shop’s employees has been heard at dozens of festivals around the world and has been broadcast by BBC Radio 3 and LRT. With their second joint project, the opera performance The Sun and the Sea (Marina), the artists represented Lithuania at the 58th Venice Biennale of Contemporary Art 2019 and were awarded the Golden Lion.

Her early work focused on improvised music. She has participated in various contemporary music projects and has performed with Angharad Davies, David Toop, John Butcher, Anton Lukoszeviez, Eddie Prevost, David Ryan, Peter Cusack, Leafcutter John, the Twentytwentyone Quartet, Arthur Bumstein, Rhodri Davies, Anat Ben David, Olga Nosova and others.

Improvised music is an important part of the artist’s oeuvre, and she performs from time to time in duo with Angharad Davies – LA Wireless and with the ensemble Common Objects.
