Gudrun Lundaus modern

Gudrun Lund (* 22 April 1930, Aalborg; † 14 January 2020) was a Danish-American composer, music teacher and pianist.

Life

Lund grew up in Ribe and later in Nyborg. She came into contact with music at an early age and received piano lessons at the age of five, later also violin and viola. From 1949 she studied piano and music education at the Det Kongelige Danske Musikkonservatorium (DKDM) in Copenhagen. She graduated in 1953. At the same time, she studied musicology, German and English at the University of Copenhagen and graduated with a Cand. Mag. degree in 1955. On 4 June 1955 she married the engineer Jørgen Widebæk Lund; they had three children. In 1956 the family went to the United States, where her husband had found work. She worked as a piano teacher and gave recitals. In 1963, she became a naturalised citizen. In the United States, her interest in contemporary music was awakened. In 1965 they returned to Denmark.

She became a teacher of music and English at Københavns Dag- og Aftenseminarium (KDAS) in Skovlunde. During her first years at this folk high school, she developed an interest in composing. She took private lessons with Svend S. Schultz (1976-1977), Morgens Winkel Holm (1977-1978) and Svend Aaquist Johansen (1978-1979). In 1978 she became a member of the composers’ association Komponistforeningen. In 1983 and 1984 she studied at the Hartt School of Music in Hartford on a scholarship from the Komponistforeningen. There she wrote her work Negotations, which was premiered with the Harvard University Wind Ensemble.

Back in Denmark, she received support from the Foreningen Kvinder i Musik (Association of Women in Music), which commissioned and organised a forum for world premieres. Her oeuvre comprises more than 150 works (2013), ranging from chamber music to orchestral works. Her music is in the neoclassical tradition of Paul Hindemith and Igor Stravinsky, but is also inspired by Carl Nielsen. In 2005 she was elected president of the Akademiet for den Tredje Alder (A3A) (Academy for the 3rd Age), founded in 1987. Gudrun Lund died in January 2020 at the age of 89.
