Myriam Marbeaus modern

Myriam Marbe (* 9 April 1931 in Bukarest; † 25 December 1997 ibid) was a Romanian pianist and composer.

Life

Marbe received her first piano lessons from her mother, who was a pianist. At the Bucharest Academy of Music, she was a piano student of Florica Musicescu and Silvia Capatâna from 1944 to 1954 and a composition student of Leon Klepper and Mihail Jora. From 1953 to 1965 she was film editor at the Casa de filme in Bucharest. From 1954 to 1988 she taught counterpoint and composition at the Bucharest Conservatory. Because she refused to join the Communist Party, she was denied a professorship. Among her students was Violeta Dinescu.

Between 1968 and 1972 she was able to participate three times in the Darmstadt Summer Courses, and in 1971 in the Festival for Contemporary Music in Royan. From 1989 to 1990 she received a working scholarship from the city of Mannheim.

In addition to her compositional activities, Marbe also worked as a publicist and musicologist. She co-authored a monograph on George Enescu and wrote essays and analyses critical of his style.

Myriam Marbe’s estate is kept at the Sophie Drinker Institute for Women’s and Gender Studies in Musicology in Bremen.
