Cathy Millikenaus modern

Cathy Milliken (* 1956 in Brisbane) is an Australian-German composer, oboist and music teacher.

Life

Milliken studied the oboe and piano in Brisbane and with Heinz Holliger in Freiburg. In 1980, she co-founded the Ensemble Modern, of which she remained a member until 2007, performing and curating numerous world premieres. Early in her career, she collaborated with Karlheinz Stockhausen, Helmut Lachenmann and Frank Zappa.

Her compositional output encompasses chamber music, orchestral works, radio plays and participatory formats. A key work is the cycle *Earth Plays* (2014–2022), which explores geological and ecological themes through music. She also develops intercultural projects such as *M.I.L.K.* and *Songs of Exclusion*.

As an educator, she headed the Berlin Philharmonic’s Education Programme (2005–2012) and developed participatory projects that have won numerous international awards. Her work has been honoured with awards including the Prix Italia, the Paul Lowin Prize and the YAM Award.
