Zofia Iwanowska-Płoszko-Ossendowska (* 18 February 1887 in Sieradz; † 1943 in Warsaw ) was a Polish violinist, composer and teacher.

Life

She was born in Sieradz, the daughter of Amela Witanowska and Feliks Iwanowski. She had five siblings: Jadwiga Zaleska-Mazurowska, Maria Chrzanowska, Tadeusz Iwanowski, Elżbieta Wolfke and Zygmunt Iwanowski.

She studied at the Warsaw Conservatory with Stanisław Barcewicz and then in Brussels with César Thomson.

She married the doctor Adam Płoszko at an early age, for whom she gave up her career and went with him to Baku. Adam got a job there thanks to his brother, who had a career as an architect designing the palaces of Caspian oil-rich men. Their sons were born there: Stanisław and Karol. Karol died as a volunteer at the Battle of Ossów in the Polish-Bolshevik War. Stanisław, who also took part in the war, joined the Foreign Legion after demobilisation. Zofia was a nurse at the time.

In 1908-1916 she ran a music school in Warsaw. At the same time she toured. Together with her sister Jadwiga Zaleska-Mazurowska, she gave two concerts in London’s Bechstein Hall, among others.

On 10 June 1922 she married again. This time to the writer and traveller Ferdynand Ossendowski, with whom she embarked on a journey to Africa.

After returning from their travels, the couple lived in Nieszawa, where they remained until the outbreak of the Second World War.
