Nataliya Pavlyukaus modern

Nataliya Pavlyuk (* 1992 in Ternopil, Ukraine) is a Ukrainian-Norwegian composer.

Life

Nataliya Pavlyuk began playing the piano at the age of 8. At the age of 11, she was admitted to the Vasyl Barvinsky Music School in her hometown of Ternopil. There she studied piano as a major subject for six years.

She began experimenting with composing at the age of 15, and at 17 she received a scholarship and began studying at the American University in Bulgaria.
In 2017, she moved to Kristiansand, Norway, where she studied at the University of Agder, including majors in composition and classical piano.
Under the direction of Norwegian composer Stig Nordhagen, she began composing one of her first orchestral works, “Dies Jovis” based on an inspiration from the painting “Blue Rage” by Jakob Weidemann.
In January 2022, she finally completed the work “Dies Jovis” and rearranged it for string orchestra to enter the KLK New Music International Composition Competition. The work was accepted for the final concert, which was to have taken place in Lviv on 22 March 2022. Due to the war, the competition was cancelled.

Nataliya boarded the coach to Skambankt as a volunteer interpreter to bring Ukrainian refugees to safety. On her way through Europe, Terje Winterstø Røthing, a singer at Skambankt, contacted SSO and told Nataliya’s story. “Dies Jovis” was performed by stringsection from the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra as a gesture of solidarity and support for Ukraine.

The day before performing Dies Jovis with SSO in Stavanger, she’s informed the competition would take place in April despite the war in Lviv. Nataliya decides to drive all the way to the Polish-Ukrainian border to be present at the competition in Lviv. Despite missiles hitting Lviv and killing citizens on the first day of rehearsals, brave Lviv orchestra musicians together with the conductor Roman Kreslenko continue with the rehearsals preparing for the final concert with composer Nataliya as their only present audience in Lviv Phillarmonic. The final competition concert took place at 10 am on Thursday, 21st of April. The piece Dies Jovis was awarded first prize.

Nataliya dedicates “Dies Jovis” to Ukrainian children, her mother Anna, musicians of the Lviv String Orchestra, her music teachers and friends, and the entire Ukrainian nation.
