Rachel Portmanaus modern

Rachel Mary Berkeley Portman, OBE (* 11. Dezember 1960 in Haslemere, England) ist eine britische Komponistin und konnte als erste Frau, die nicht Teil eines Komponisten-Teams war, den Oscar für die beste Filmmusik gewinnen.

Leben

Schon in ihrer frühen Kindheit spielte Rachel Portman verschiedene Instrumente. Im Alter von 13 Jahren begann sie zu komponieren.

Sie absolvierte am Worcester College an der Universität von Oxford den Abschluss in Klassischer Musik, Komposition und Orchestration. Dort schrieb sie auch 1982 für den erfolgreichen Studentenfilm Privileged mit dem jungen Hugh Grant in der Hauptrolle ihre erste Filmmusik. Nach ihrem Studium arbeitete sie vor allem in der Fernsehspiele-Abteilung des BBC Channel 4.

1988 gewann sie den Young Composer Of The Year-Award vom britischen Filminstitut. 1991 wurde sie von der British Academy of Film and Television Arts in der Kategorie Best Score für den Fernseh-Dreiteiler Orangen sind nicht die einzige Frucht nominiert. 1992 gelang ihr der Durchbruch in Hollywood mit dem Film Die Herbstzeitlosen von Beeban Kidron. 1997 bekam sie als erste Frau den Oscar für die beste Filmmusik in dem Film Emma. Seitdem bekam sie schon zwei weitere Oscar-Nominierungen. Aber Portman komponiert nicht nur Filmmusik. Am 31. Mai 2003 wurde in Houston ihre Oper Der kleine Prinz nach dem Buch von Antoine de Saint-Exupéry uraufgeführt.

Portman bevorzugt mechanische Musikinstrumente wie das Klavier und verzichtet nahezu vollständig auf digitale oder elektronische Instrumente wie z. B. Synthesizer.

Portman ist seit 1995 mit dem Filmproduzenten Uberto Pasolini verheiratet und hat drei Kinder (Anna, Giulia und Niky).

Life

From her early childhood, Rachel Portman played various instruments. She began composing at the age of 13.

She graduated from Worcester College at Oxford University with a degree in Classical Music, Composition and Orchestration. There she also wrote her first film score in 1982 for the successful student film Privileged starring a young Hugh Grant. After graduating, she worked mainly in the television drama department of BBC Channel 4.

In 1988 she won the Young Composer Of The Year Award from the British Film Institute. In 1991 she was nominated by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in the Best Score category for the television three-parter Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit. In 1992 she made her breakthrough in Hollywood with the film The Autumn Timeless by Beeban Kidron. In 1997 she became the first woman to win an Oscar for Best Film Score for the film Emma. Since then she has received two more Oscar nominations. But Portman does not only compose film music. On 31 May 2003, her opera The Little Prince, based on the book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, was premiered in Houston.

Portman prefers mechanical musical instruments such as the piano and almost completely dispenses with digital or electronic instruments such as synthesizers.

Portman has been married to film producer Uberto Pasolini since 1995 and has three children (Anna, Giulia and Niky).
