Iris ter Schiphorst (* 22. Mai 1956 in Hamburg) ist eine Komponistin, Pianistin, Autorin, Bassistin, Schlagzeugerin und Keyboarderin.

Leben

Der Kindheitswunsch, Tänzerin zu werden, wurde durch eine Krankheit vereitelt. Ihre Mutter war Pianistin und erteilte ihr ersten Klavierunterricht. Von 1973 bis 1978 studierte sie zunächst Klavier an der Bremer Musikhochschule. Nach zahlreichen Reisen durch Europa und Afrika (1978-80) spielte sie als Bassistin, Schlagzeugerin und Keyboarderin in diversen Rockgruppen, unter anderem in der Bremer Frauenband „Bruno und Paul“. Ab dem Jahr 1986 studierte sie zunächst an der FU Berlin, später an der Humboldt-Universität Philosophie, Theaterwissenschaft sowie Kulturwissenschaft. Gleichzeitig besuchte sie Kompositionskurse bei Dieter Schnebel und Luigi Nono sowie musikwissenschaftliche Seminare bei Helga de la Motte-Haber. Ende der 1980er Jahre gründete sie mit Mayako Kubo, Frank Hilberg, Franz Martin Olbrisch und anderen den Verein zeit-Musik. Im Jahre 1990 folgte die Gründung des auf live-elektronische Musik spezialisierten Ensembles Intrors. Von 1996 bis 2001 arbeitete sie zusammen mit ihrem damaligen Lebensgefährten, dem Berliner Komponisten Helmut Oehring.

Iris ter Schiphorst wurde auf der Frühjahrs-Mitgliederversammlung der Akademie der Künste Berlin am 25. Mai 2013 als neues Mitglied in die Sektion Musik gewählt. Seit dem Wintersemester 2015/16 bekleidet sie eine Professur für Medienkomposition an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien. 2015 erhielt sie den renommierten Heidelberger Künstlerinnenpreis.

Life

Her childhood wish to become a dancer was thwarted by illness. Her mother was a pianist and gave her first piano lessons. From 1973 to 1978 she first studied piano at the Bremen Musikhochschule. After numerous trips through Europe and Africa (1978-80), she played bass, drums and keyboards in various rock groups, including the Bremen women’s band “Bruno und Paul”. From 1986 onwards, she studied philosophy, theatre studies and cultural studies at the Free University of Berlin and later at the Humboldt University. At the same time, she attended composition courses with Dieter Schnebel and Luigi Nono as well as musicological seminars with Helga de la Motte-Haber. At the end of the 1980s, she founded the zeit-Musik association with Mayako Kubo, Frank Hilberg, Franz Martin Olbrisch and others. This was followed in 1990 by the founding of the ensemble Intrors, which specialises in live electronic music. From 1996 to 2001 she worked together with her then partner, the Berlin composer Helmut Oehring.

Iris ter Schiphorst was elected as a new member of the Music Section at the spring general meeting of the Akademie der Künste Berlin on 25 May 2013. Since the winter semester 2015/16, she has held a professorship for media composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. In 2015, she received the renowned Heidelberg Female Artist Award.
