Eva Ugalde Alvarez (* 9. Januar 1973 in San Sebastián – Spanien) ist eine spanische Komponistin, Chorleiterin und Professorin für Musiksprache und Chor am Francisco Escudero Professional Music Conservatory.

Life

Eva Ugalde Alvarez was born in San Sebastian in 1973. She studied piano, composition, choral conducting and pedagogy at the San Sebastian Conservatory of Music. At the age of twenty she joined the women’s choir Kanta Cantemus Koroa, directed by the renowned composer Javier Busto, who encouraged her to compose choral music. Her first works, written in the late 1990s, were for white voices. She never gave up composing this type of work.

The complexity and harmonic density of her pieces do not prevent them from being clear and easily intelligible when listened to. This is largely due to the fact that she uses a mainly tonal language with influences of jazz and New Age music. Her compositions have been obligatory works in the most prestigious choir competitions, such as the Tolosa International Competition or the San Vicente de la Barquera Seafaring Song Competition.

Ugalde has been a member of the jury in numerous prestigious choral competitions. Among the Spanish competitions in which she has been a member of the jury are those of San Vicente de la Barquera, La Antigua in Zumárraga (now defunct) or the Gran Premio Nacional de Canto Coral in Ejea de los Caballeros, Gijón and Valladolid. Also in international competitions such as the European Award for Choral Composers, Concorso Internazionale di Composizione “Guido d’Arezzo” (Florence), Festivale Internazionale “Leonardo da Vinci”, Choir Festival “Johannes Brahms” (Wernigerode) or the Festival Internacional de Coros Femeninos en Latinoamérica (Puerto Madryn). In addition, she has received numerous composition awards and her music has been performed in countries such as the USA, Japan, Canada and Sweden.

In recent years, she has promoted her pedagogical facet by giving master classes, giving courses and participating as a speaker in various seminars. Her masterclasses have focused on her own work, including those given in Jaca (Pyrenaeum Música) and in Cassano-Magnano (Movincanto). As for choral composition courses, she has participated in FENIARCO Seminario Europeo Per Compositori (Aosta) and in FICFE (Puerto Madryn). Also, in her work as a speaker, it is worth mentioning the conference “La composición desde una óptica femenina” for the University of Valencia or “CompositorAs, la historia invisible” for the FICFE. These lectures are examples of her interest in the dissemination of works composed by women.

As a conductor, she was invited in 2015 to Nyiregyhaza (Hungary) to work and conduct her own works with the Cantemus Women’s Choir of the Kodaly Institute, one of the most prestigious in its discipline and usually conducted by Dénes Szabó. Her facet as a chorister (contralto) has been developed in the women’s choir Kanta Cantemus Koroa, conducted by Javier Busto; and the mixed group Kup Taldea, conducted by Gabriel Baltés. She teaches Musical Language and Choir at the Francisco Escudero Professional Conservatory of Music.

Her compositions form part of the repertoire of numerous vocal groups and many of them have been recorded. Most of them can be listened to on streaming platforms.
