Chin Un-sukaus modern

Chin Un-suk (* 1961 in Seoul, South Korea) is a German-South Korean composer.

Life

Chin Un-suk studied composition with Kang Suk-hi at Seoul National University and as a DAAD scholarship holder with György Ligeti at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Hamburg 1985-1988.

In 1984 Chin Un-suk won her first international prizes. During her studies with Ligeti, however, she took a three-year creative break, as her teacher dismissed her previously composed works in the post-serial style as outdated. In 1988, Chin Un-suk moved to Berlin and worked there for years as a freelance composer in the recording studio of the Technical University of Berlin, where she realised seven pieces. The first major orchestral work, Troerinnen, was premiered by the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in 1990. In 1991, her breakthrough work Akrostichon-Wortspiel was commissioned by the Nieuw Ensemble; since then, the work has been performed in more than 20 countries in Europe, Asia and North America. In 1994, Fantaisie mécanique marked the beginning of her collaboration with the Parisian new music group Ensemble intercontemporain, which led to several commissions. Since 1995, she has been published exclusively by Boosey & Hawkes, and in 1999 she began an artistic collaboration with conductor Kent Nagano with Miroirs des temps, who has premiered six of her works to date.

Chin’s Violin Concerto, for which she received the Grawemeyer Award in 2004, was premiered in Berlin in 2002 with Viviane Hagner as soloist. Since then, the piece has been performed in fourteen countries – in Europe, Asia and North America – including by Christian Tetzlaff, the Berlin Philharmonic and Simon Rattle at the Berlin Philharmonie in April 2005.

Chin has been composer-in-residence at the Lucerne Festival in 2014, the Philharmonie Essen, the Cologne Philharmonie’s Acht Brücken Festival, Konserthuset’s Tonsätterfestival, and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, among others. In 2006, at the invitation of Myung-whun Chung, she became Composer-in-Residence at the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, where she founded a New Music Series in the same year, in the framework of which 170 central works of modern classical and contemporary music from Claude Debussy to Helmut Lachenmann have since received their Korean premiere. In 2016, she became Artistic Advisor of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. Since 2011, she has led the Music of Today series of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London at the invitation of Esa-Pekka Salonen. In the 2019/2020 season, Unsuk Chin was composer in residence with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester Hamburg. Chin was accepted as a member of the Freie Akademie der Künste in Hamburg in 2019.

In June 2007, Chin’s first opera Alice in Wonderland premiered at the Bavarian State Opera and was voted premiere of the year in an international critics’ poll by Opernwelt magazine.
