Mari Vihmandaus modern

Mari Vihmand (* 17 May 1967 Tartu, Soviet Union) is an Estonian-German composer.

Life

Mari Vihmand completed her studies in composition with Eino Tamberg at the Tallinn State Conservatory (now the Academy of Music and Theatre) in 1990. In 1996/97 she continued her studies at the Lyon Conservatory. In 1997 she passed her master’s examination with Lepo Sumera. In 1998 she moved to Germany. She is married to the German composer Rainer Bürck. The couple lives in Bad Urach.

Mari Vihmand composes mainly chamber music, but also pieces for orchestra. She has also written choral music and children’s songs. In 1995, her first opera Lugu klaasist, based on motifs by Hans Christian Andersen, had its premiere. In October 2008, the opera Armastuse valem (libretto: Maimu Berg and Mari Vihmand, based on scenes from the novella The Mathematics of Nina Gluckstein by Esther Vilar) will be premiered at the National Opera Estonia in Tallinn in a production by Liis Kolle.
