Jennifer Walsheaus modern

Jennifer Walshe (* 1 June 1974 in Dublin) is an Irish composer, performer and university professor.

Life

Jennifer Walshe was born into an artistic family; her mother is a writer, her father is an artist and art historian. Walshe began playing the piano at an early age, received trumpet lessons at the age of ten and later played in the Irish Youth Orchestra. She wrote her first compositions for various wind ensembles, which were premiered by the Irish Youth Wind Ensemble, among others.

Walshe studied composition at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama with Rita McAllister and John Maxwell Geddes and was also taught by Kevin Volans and James MacMillan. She continued her studies at Northwestern University in Chicago with Michael Pisaro and Amnon Wolman, graduating in 2002 with a Ph.D. in Composition & Music Technology.

Walshe won the Kranichsteiner Music Prize in 2000, the Praetorius Music Prize for Composition in 2008 and the British Composer Award for Innovation (BASCA) in 2016. She has held fellowships at the Akademie Schloss Solitude, DAAD Berliner Künstlerprogramm, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts (New York) and the Fondazione Claudio Buziol in Venice, among others.

Together with violinist Jonathan Chen, she founded the duo nolimetangere, with whom she regularly improvised and also included her voice in her performances.

Walshe has worked with numerous ensembles and orchestras worldwide, including Klangforum Wien, Arditti Quartet, Ensemble recherche, National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Resonanz, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart and Schlagquartett Köln. Both as a composer and performer, she has appeared at almost all international festivals for new music since 2000, including the Donaueschinger Musiktage, MaerzMuzik, Ultraschall Berlin, Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik, Wien Modern, Ars musica, November Music, Lucerne Festival and Splice Festival (USA).

Her works have been premiered internationally by major ensembles and released on various labels including Merge Records, Interval Recordings, Farpoint Recordings and Migro. Walshe publishes her scores on Contemporary Music Centre (CMC) Ireland.

In 2002 and 2018, Walshe gave workshops at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music. Since 2016 she has taught as Professor of Performance at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts, where she co-directs the Campus Gegenwart with Judith Siegmund.

Walshe has been a member of Aosdána since autumn 2020.
