Opera

Since 1639, opera (from the Italian opera in musica, “musical work”) has referred to a musical genre of theatre that emerged around 1600 (at the beginning of the Baroque era). The opera house (the performance venue or producing institution) or the performing company are also referred to as an opera.
An opera consists of the setting of a dramatic poem to music, performed by an ensemble of singers, an accompanying orchestra and sometimes a chorus and a ballet ensemble. In addition to singing, the performers act and dance on a theatre stage, which is designed using painting, architecture, props, lighting and stage technology. The roles of the performers are visually emphasised by make - up and costumes. The artistic direction is provided by conductors for the music, directors for the characters and set and costume designers for the sets. The dramaturgy supports them in the background.
