Olga Pashchenko – Guess who?

The pianist Olga Pashchenko combines excerpts from Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn’s ‘Songs without Words’ to create musical narratives. As children, the two siblings liked to draw inspiration for their piano pieces from texts, but which of them is the actual inventor of this genre remains a mystery. It is possible that they created this genre together, or that the creator of the genre traditionally attributed exclusively to Felix was Fanny. Although this music comes without text, it is full of poetry and is wonderfully suited to the 1836 Conrad Graf piano that Pashchenko has chosen for this recording. The Graf piano, a brand favored by Felix, has a recitative-like quality that Pashchenko uses to aptly articulate the poetry inherent in these songs without words or, as Fanny called them, songs for the pianoforte.
