Henriëtte Hilda Bosmans (* 6 December 1895 in Amsterdam; † 2 July 1952 ibid.) was a Dutch composer and pianist.

Life

Henriëtte Bosmans received piano lessons from her mother Sara Benedicts from early childhood and graduated as a piano virtuoso with honours at the age of only 17. By this time she had already begun to compose herself, her first work being published when she was 19.

In 1919, her first violin sonata was performed in public. She wrote chamber music in particular and studied orchestral music with Cornelis Dopper, at the same time composing mainly works for the cello. In 1920 and 1921, she expanded her compositional knowledge through a theory course with Arnold Schönberg, among others. Bosman’s second cello concerto is dedicated to Frieda Belinfante, who was the cello soloist at the premiere in 1923.

From 1927 to 1930 she took lessons with Willem Pijper. In 1929, her Concertino for piano and orchestra was performed at the VII World Music Days of the International Society for New Music (ISCM World Music Days) in Geneva. Bosmans and the Dutch composer Emmy Wegener were the first women composers whose works were performed at the International Society for New Music World Music Days in 1929.

As the daughter of a Jewish mother, Bosmans was banned from working and performing as a “half-Jew” from May 1940, which affected all artists who could not show membership in the National Socialist Reich Chamber of Culture. In the years that followed, she was therefore only able to perform in secret.

Bosmans survived the occupation without imprisonment through internal emigration. From 1945 she performed again as a pianist in The Hague and Amsterdam and also published numerous articles in the following years.

In 1948 she met the French soprano Noémie Pérugia, who inspired her to write over 20 song compositions. Bosman’s last performance was on 12 March 1952 as a pianist in duo with Pérugia.

Among her compositions are orchestral works, concertos, songs, chamber, cello and piano music.
