Snežana Nešićaus modern

Snežana Nešić (* 25 November 1972 in Smederevska Palanka) is a Serbian -German composer, accordionist and conductor.

Life

After studying at the “P. I. Tchaikovsky” Academy of Music in Kiev and at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media (composition with Johannes Schöllhorn and accordion with Elsbeth Moser), she has been a lecturer for New Music and Composition at the HMTM Hanover since 2011. In the 2014/15 academic year, she took on a guest professorship for composition at the “St. Cyril and Methodius” University in Skopje (Macedonia). From 2018 to 2020, she was also a lecturer for contemporary music at the HMT “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” in Leipzig.

Snežana Nešić has received commissions for compositions from the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig, NDR television, the Philharmonie Luxembourg, the Ensemble Contemporain de Montréal, the Hanover State Opera, the HGNM, the Ensemble New Babylon and the Kammeroper Köln, among others. Her compositions have also been performed at the Salzburg Biennale, the Musik der Jahrhunderte Stuttgart, the international theatre festival BITEF and with the Opera Company Chants Libres in Montréal. In her compositional work, she deals, among other things, with various forms of music theatre and writes her own texts for them. Parts of her opera “The Rain Passed Over” were premiered and awarded prizes in 2015 as part of the “Oper’Actuel-Work in Progress” festival. The complete semi-staged premiere took place in Hanover.

Snežana Nešić has won international prizes as a composer and performer. As a composer, she won 1st prizes at the Molinari Quartet Composition Competition and the Weimar Spring Days International Composition Competition for Contemporary Music, among others, and Chants Libres Opera Company and Eisenach Bach International Composition Prize 2019 awards, respectively. Her compositions have been performed at music festivals such as the Salzburg Biennale and Musik der Jahrhunderte in Stuttgart.

She received a DAAD and the German Academy Rome Villa Massimo Composition Scholarship in Casa Baldi and has been composer in residence at the Goethe House in Rome, the Wilhelm Kempff House in Positano, the German Study Centre in Venice and had residencies for New Music in Montréal, among others.

As an accordionist, Snežana Nešić has also won prizes at international competitions, including first prizes at the International Accordion Competition Klingenthal and International Accordion Prize of Castelfidardo.

Snežana Nešić is also the artistic director and conductor of the ensembles ur.werk and Incontri, which are dedicated to contemporary music. She has worked as a performer with orchestras and ensembles, including e.g. the NDR Symphony Orchestra Hamburg and the Lower Saxony State Orchestra Hanover, and realised premieres and performances of the works of important composers.

In 2021-2024, she will serve as artistic director of the programme for young composers within the framework of Musik21Niedersachsen.
